TiVo Likely To Go After More Competitors In Patent Cases
TiVo, the pioneer in digital video technology is fresh from a win in an infringement trial against Dish Network Corp. According to Thomas Rogers, CEO of TiVo Inc, they are likely to uncover more patent violations from competitors.
In November, the US Patent and Trademark Office ruled in favor of TiVo in a video recorder patent case. This makes it difficult for Dish to get an $89.6 mn infringement overturned on appeal. Dish is the second largest US sattelite TV provider.
According to Rogers, there was a feeling that since Echostar had violated patents, it was highly likely that others had done so as well. Preference would be given to agreements rather than litigation he said. He did not clarify whether TiVo was going to sue other companies.
After Rogers appointment as CEO in 2005 TiVo has been using new sources of revenue. This is in response to competition from sattelite and cable TV providers. TiVo appliances run movies, music, TV shows, internet video and digital photo albums.
