TiVo DVR Launched In Boston By Comcast

The buildup was long and slow. Finally Comcast launched its DVR service with TiVo. This new service is a combination of TiVo’s interface with the great exclusivity of Comcast’s channel lineup. To add to the mix is Comcast’s On Demand library. This will be available in the latters set top box for an extra $2.95 in addition to its standard HD DVR service.

TiVo and Comcast announced their strategic partnership in March 2005. When this partnership was announced the two companies were to use Comcast’s current DVR platform to develop a version of TiVo’s service on it. Boston is the first market this plan has come to effect in. The original plan was to make the hybrid service operational in most Comcast markets by the year 2006.

This new launch - the Comcast DVR with TiVo service is a milestone for both companies. This is the first time cable customers will be able to search across television and On Demand instantly by using TiVo’s smart search features. In addition they will be able to use the TiVO interface to navigate through all of their digital cable service.

A rollout of the DVR/TiVo service to additional markets is expected from Comcast later in the year.
