Margaret Schmidt on Tivo, the company
Margaret Schmidt is a speaker on MX 2009, perhaps speaking as you read this 2-3 March in San Frisco. TiVO has a great interface and is highly functional but it also has a great personality. To this Margaret says that the team designing the first TiVo has credit for the interface because they knew they were making something revolutionary. They gave TiVo a distinct feel from both TeeVee and the Computer.
The organizational structure of TiVo is interesting and lets explain that. Vice Presidents report to the Senior Vice President of the region. Retail purchase and cable/sattelitte purchase TiVo have different divisions. The interweaving of collaboration is very complex among the different divisions of TiVo.
TiVo aims to achieve a holistic user experience. Valuable feedback, in fact the most valuable comes from user research. TiVo’s external interactions are very interesting. Partnerships begin when value can be added to the TiVo experience. There is a great deal of collaboration throughout the process of design. Ego has to be zero.
TiVo is competing with similar products that are “free” yet they are still around. In the future TiVo aims to focus on great TV content continually and ways to find the best content.
