Early Adopters Left In The Lurch With A New Upgrade Fee

It may be argued that Australian adopters of TiVo have been betrayed. The cheap upgrade on TiVo’s networking features has not come. After TiVo’s launch in Australia in 2008 there was a promise made. The promise was of a firmware update that would allow music, photos and videos across the home network to be played. Also recordings were to be made archivable. The promise was that the upgrade would be cheap.

Now that the upgrade is announced it is not cheap at all. It comes with a price tag of $199. That is a lot of money being spent on a TiVo that has a small hard drive and disabled ad skipping. Many of the people who praised TiVo at it’s launch are now eating their words.

Interestingly Australia’s TiVo has the backing of Seven Network. This networks contempt for its viewers has driven many of them to Seven’s rivals. TiVo faithful have been betrayed.

In the light of TiVo numbers falling in America, they surely needed to put up a good performance away from home. Bad publicity may be good for a celebrity but I doubt it will help TiVo in the long run.
