TiVo External Hard Drive: Giving Your TiVo Series 3 That Extra Recording Space

December 20, 2007

To all TiVo fanatics out there, you will see that the latest addition TiVo has will now have that eSATA port that will enable you to expand storage space by allowing you to add another hard drive. With this, you will be able to record and store more TV programs.

So, if you ever wish to use that eSATA port at the back of your TiVo Series 3, now is the time to do so by adding an external hard drive. The great thing about this particular feature is that you don’t even need to pry open your TiVo just to install the hard drive. So, just how do you install an extra hard drive in your TiVo Series 3?

First thing’s first, you need equipments. Basically, you will need 3 equipments, which are:

•    Obviously the TiVo Series 3 with the remote running the 8.1.1 software.

•    eSATA enclosure plus drive with eSATA cable.

•    SATA drive with an external power source as well as an eSATA to SATA cable.

Now that you have the equipments, you are now ready to install your external hard drive to your TiVo.

The first thing you need to do is power down your TiVo. Then, you need to connect your eSATA gear. If you prefer to use a bare drive, which is not recommended, you have to make sure that you have a power source for it.

The next step is you need to turn on your hard drive first then your TiVo next. Try to remember that you need to hold the pause button down in your remote and make sure that the remote is pointing on the TiVo the whole time.

When the front panel lights turn off and an orange LED lights up, you can now let go of the pause button. After this, punch in the numbers 6 and 2 on your remote. After doing this, you will then need to restart your TiVo and you will see that the TiVo will be able to detect your second hard drive and will inform you that it has been activated. That’s it. Now, all you need to do is sit back and record more of your favorite shows with more hard drive space.

TiVo in Canada

December 16, 2007

After years of waiting for TiVo to appear in stores Canadians now can buy TiVo. TiVo’s Series2 DT was launched in Canada about two weeks back. It’s features include a wireless function. It does not have the ability to record Hi-Def. In addition people in Quebec do not have access to it yet.

When TiVo was introduced in the US, it was hugely popular due to the lack of competition. Here, however TiVo is faced with PVR’s - personal video recorders that Canadians use. Many people who would have bought TiVo’s have already purchased PVR’s. It was just too frustrating to wait for TiVo.

TiVo’s technology can be overcome (in a sense) by interactive banner ads that TiVo is offering to advertisers. This technology ensures that the advertisers name is seen. In addition viewers can choose to click on the Ads to get more information on the product.

Store 292 Hours of Programming With the New WeaKnees TiVo

December 6, 2007

HDTV has been plagued by one persistent problem. This is that much more hard drive space is required by HDTV programs as compared with standard definition programs. With the TiVo HD or Series 3 TiVo you will find no need of storing huge volumes of programs anymore.

The TiVo Series 3 can store around 30 hours of HDTV in its 250 GB hard drive. If you want to store standard definition programs, you can store 300 hours of it in this. These TiVo’s are available from WeaKnees, a TiVo reseller.

Now things have risen above the bar once more. WeaKnees now offers a 2 Terabyte TiVo, WoW! Do you know how many hours of programming that amounts to? Let me tell you - that is a whopping 292 hours of programming. If you were to watch that straight off with the commercials, it would take you 12 days non stop. If you prefer to zap past the commercials that is still 9 days programming!

If you are recording standard definition television which is what you would be doing for many of the shows it totals to a whopping 2777 hours of standard definition TV. It would take you 115 days of continuous TV watching to run out of that programming. That is a real treat for TiVo lovers. And if you are really keen on knowing how much this will set you back by.. it costs $1599. Not a big hindrance for die hard TiVo fanatics, I think.

How to Convert Tivo Files

December 3, 2007

What of our favorite features of the Tivo is Tivo Desktop (available for free download at Tivo.com). With this software, you can easily transfer your favorite recordings from your Tivo to your laptop or PC.

Avex Tivo to MPEG ConverterIf you’re like many Tivo users, you want the ability to convert these files to DVD format, iPod format, Zune format, PSP format, iPhone format and many other compatible formats. Tivo offers a solution in a partnership with Roxio that can convert your recordings to burn to DVD or play on an iPod. Unfortunately, this software costs $50 and cannot convert to all the formats you may need.

A better option in our opinion is to download the Avex Video Converter Platinum. This terrific software can convert your Tivo recordings to DVD format, to MPEG, MP4, AVI, WMV, DivX, Xvid, 3GP and other video formats. This means you can enjoy your Tivo recordings on a DVD, on an Apple iPod, a Microsoft Zune, a Sony PSP and many other popular portable devices.

The great thing about this program is that it’s competitively priced at  just $35, it’s very easy to use and it gets the job done.
